Who are the kids CampOut supports?
CampOut will focus on LGBT young people aged in their mid-late teens, those questioning their sexual orientation, or in LGBT families. With this focus, CampOut will be open to all kids.
While the stages of sexual identity development vary enormously, we know that:
• 9% of high school students (grades 9-12) identify as LGB or questioning. That’s around 3 million 14-18 year olds nationally
• By their early to mid teens, many identify as gay or bisexual, and about half have disclosed their sexuality to someone by the age of 17. Some studies have found that the average age that a male child becomes aware of feeling different sexually is as low as 10.
• Nationally, around 270,000 kids nationwide live in families with an LGBT parent, and 20% of same sex households (cohabiting couples) have children. As they are based on census data, these figures probably underestimate the true picture.
