How can you support CampOut kids?

In the coming months, CampOut’s supporters will continue to address the logistical and financial issues involved in transforming the CampOut concept into reality, including:

• Making a determination as to whether the camp should be situated in one or several physical locations – such as an existing camp facility – or more broadly distributed to possibly include urban settings and selecting the right facility
• Identifying strategies for reaching out to target populations through schools, social service agencies, and other organizations
• Enlisting individuals who can assist with the logistical factors associated with launching the camp and developing appropriate programming, as well as with establishing the infrastructure for mentoring
• Developing a comprehensive business plan and marketing materials (both offline and online) for the organization
• Identifying supporters willing to fund the initial infrastructure and operating expenses associated with launching the camp and identifying and selecting mentees
• Establishing a revenue stream for the organization by determining an appropriate balance between campers whose families can afford to pay for their participation in CampOut and those who will require scholarships

To support us turn the CampOut idea into real support for LGBT kids, we are now seeking:
• Your feedback and reactions to the CampOut concept (send us an e-mail or comment);
• Members of an Advisory Board to help guide these early stages including LGBT school students, and experts in youth development, schools, social work, summer camp operations and programming, fundraising and legal/regulatory;
• Individuals or organizations to be partners with us developing the infrastructure or providing services;
• Expressions of interest from potential mentees; or
Financial supporters, interesting in contributing to the initial infrastructure and operating expenses.

CampOut’s advocates feel that the concept provides a compelling story for potential supporters, particularly angel donors. From Save the Children to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, there is a long track record of philanthropic success among organizations focused on young people in need and LGBT issues. The camp’s early-stage supporters are confident that LGBT adults will identify strongly with the idea of creating an environment where LGBT youth can find kindred spirits and positive reinforcement.
